You do not have to worry about having any set level of knowledge before starting. The course is designed to take you through a natural progression, building from basic nutrition to the more in depth aspects of weight loss. Where appropriate, the sections include one or more self-assessments, we call these check points and these do not have to be submitted to the College. As well as these check points, there are three formal assessments which will have to be sent in to the college for marking. These are at various points through the course, and one major one at the end. All assignments are to be done at home with no attendance necessary. The Plaskett College Diploma is awarded upon successful completion of all the coursework and the assignments. The course is designed to be completed within 12 months from the date of enrolment.
Course Syllabus Outline Section 1 Teaches the basic science of the bulk nutrients: protein, carbohydrate and fat. These are the suppliers of food energy and ultimately help to decide an individual's fatness or thinness. You will need to understand these so as to manipulate them with skill.
Section 2 Comprises of an introduction to the problem of overweight and obesity. It comes in sub-sections called 'Understanding the Field' and 'The Nature of the Problem'. It reviews the known facts, sets out the scope and, through critical appraisal, offers ways to arrive at a definition of optimum or desirable weight.
Section 3 In this section we explore 'The Theory of what Causes Overweight and Obesity'. We look at the underlying reasons for this current epidemic scale of the problem in developed societies throughout the world. Understanding this will give you an insight into what needs to be done.
Section 4 We look closely at the 'Health Consequences of Excess Weight', looking closely at the connection between overweight and ill health, and so the shortening of life.
Section 5 The principles of correcting excessive weight. We now begin to explore the available strategies of weight control, with the emphasis on the wide options that exist for dietary manipulation.
Section 6 Is about reducing weight through diet, with the emphasis of changing dietary composition for the better, in many instances this will not necessarily mean reducing the amount of food. This section looks closely at understanding and measuring food energy.
Section 7 Concentrates upon the value of individual foods as a contribution to a diet and upon selecting from each food class (eg dairy products, fruits, etc), the ones that will make the best contribution to an individual client's diet.
Section 8 Called 'Building your Knowledge of Foods into Individual Diets', this section gets down to the key job of building and structuring a diet to help each particular client.
Section 9 This section takes you through managing the consultation, helping you to structure the activity to provide a satisfactory experience for your clients. This is the basis for a good approach to weight reduction.
Section 10 We cover the method of calculating the calories in every day life. We look at the benefits of exercise for suitable clients and discuss more specific diets such as the ketogenic diet.
Section 11 Brings us to the section where we set about designing slimming programmes that are not only effective at weight loss, but also promote good health. To give you an insight into the potential problems, we also look at the drug treatments given for overweight by doctors. We also take you through the guidelines for follow-ups after the first consultation.
Section 12 Deals with non-food substances or supplements that with help with weight loss, we look at how they actually achieve this and discuss their effectiveness and safety implications for the individual. These include some micronutrients, herbs, enzyme inhibitors and sequestering agents.
Section 13 Is a rather substantial final section where we again deal with the 'Management of your Consultations'. This will hopefully help to further develop your consultation skills and objective of setting up in slimming practice. We deal with the tricky question of compliance and address weight regain and how to avoid it.
